Plainedge Moms Softball League • 2026
General Rules
Game Length Games are 1.5 hours or 6 innings, whichever comes first. No extra innings — games may end in a tie.
Home & Away Home and away teams are determined by a coin flip before each game.
Ball All games will use a 12" softball.
Catcher Equipment Catchers must wear a mask at minimum.
Bats Softball bats only. Baseball bats are strictly prohibited — no exceptions.
Pitching Rules
The pitch must be released with an underhand motion at a moderate speed. No windmill pitching.
Pitch speed is left to the umpire's discretion. Remember — these are friendly games!
The umpire will warn any pitcher delivering a pitch deemed excessively fast. Repeated violations may result in further action at the umpire's discretion.
Rules of Play
Fielding Teams may use a maximum of 10 players on defense. A team must start and finish a game with at least 8 players.
Batting Order Minimum 9 batters (or 8 if short-handed) up to the full roster. DHs are unlimited — fielders don't have to hit, hitters don't have to field.
Bunting Bunting is not permitted.
Skipping a Batter If a player can't bat and no sub is available, that spot is skipped with no penalty.
Walks Standard walk rules apply.
Stealing Stealing is not permitted.
No Run Rule There is no run rule. However, a team significantly behind has the right to end the game early. Please be respectful.
Baserunning Rules
Courtesy Runners May be used at any time for any reason. The runner must be the last recorded out or a bench sub. The batter must reach first base before a courtesy runner is used.
Obstruction Defensive players may not block any base without possession of the ball.
Sliding Runners must slide or give themselves up at any close play at any base.
Dead Balls Runners advance one (1) base from their position when the ball is declared dead.
Double First Base Runners from home must use the orange safety base. Only runners continuing to second may use the white inside base (unless the throw pulls the fielder off or comes from foul territory). Outs may only be recorded on the white inside base.
Substitutions
Defensive Unlimited defensive substitutions are permitted at any time.
Lineup Spot Partners Two players may share the same lineup spot and rotate each time through the order. Example: in spot #6, Player A and Player B alternate at bat each time through.
Important A player may not appear in more than one lineup spot.
Playoffs
The top 4 teams from each division qualify for the playoffs.
Seeding is determined by regular season record. Tiebreaker: run differential.
Semifinals #1 vs #4 and #2 vs #3 in each division.
Championship Semifinal winners meet in the championship game.
The Spirit of This League
Our goal is to give the moms a place to have a little fun and maybe show their kids what they can do on the field — a time where families and friends can cheer for you. The league reserves the right to amend these rules at any time.
